SLO County man stole $1,600 in coins, police say. And that wasn’t all
A man suspected of stealing $1,600 in coins from a San Luis Obispo County car wash now faces several more charges once officers arrived at his home to arrest him.
After he was taken into custody for the alleged coin machine theft at Bob’s Self Serve Car Wash in Grover Beach on May 5, Anthony Chargualaf, 43, of Grover beach was discovered to be in possession of a stolen cargo trailer, illegal firearms, ammunition and stolen property, the Grover Beach Police Department posted on Facebook.
Grover Beach Police Chief Jim Munro estimated Chargualaf stole $1,600 from the car wash machine at at 320 West Grand Ave. over two confirmed burglaries. He tried to steal from the machine several other times but was unsuccessful, he said.
Chargualaf was identified using video surveillance footage and “good old-fashioned police work” after several weeks of investigation, the post said.
Chargualaf lived across the street from the car wash, the post said.
When he was arrested on May 6, police discovered the other stolen objects and illegal guns in his possession, the post said.
Chargualaf was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail and charged by the District Attorney’s Office with multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including four charges of second-degree vehicle and garage burglary, four charges of vandalism less than $400 and one charge of possession of burglary tools, according to court records.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Chargualaf was not in the SLO County Jail, according to the jail’s Who’s In Custody database. Court records show his bail was originally set at $60,000, and then he was released under a Post Arraignment Monitoring Program to remain in the community while awaiting his court hearings.
