Deputies surround home in Oceano after report of break-in
Law enforcement was called to a neighborhood in Oceano on Friday afternoon following a now-unsubstantiated report of a man attempting to break into a home.
Shortly before 3 p.m., the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and Grover Beach Police Department received a report from a woman who said she saw a man trying to break into a home in the area of 18th Street and the Pike in Oceano, according to emergency radio traffic.
By around 3:05 p.m., law enforcement had surrounded the house, spotting the subject trying to break the window at the back of the residence, according to emergency radio.
The subject, described as 5-foot, 8 inches tall and weighing roughly 160 pounds, wearing a green tank top, blue shorts, knee-high black socks and white and black shoes, was attempting to access the back of the property, according to emergency radio traffic.
Law enforcement deployed a drone in the skies above the scene but waived additional units from North County at around 3:17 p.m., according to emergency radio.
A unit was requested to block traffic at 19th Street and the Pike at around 3:20 p.m., according to the radio traffic.
Bystanders were asked to stay behind a trailer for their safety as at least seven police cars blocked the streets surrounding the home by around 3:48 p.m.
After about an hour and a half, a group of law enforcement officers entered the home wearing SWAT gear in formation after gathering behind a police car in front of the dwelling at around 4:30 p.m.
Shortly after entering, all law enforcement officers exited the building and a pair of Sheriff’s Office vehicles departed the scene of the incident at around 4:36 p.m.
According to the emergency radio scanner, all non-Sheriff’s Office units were released from the scene of the incident, and the roads surrounding the home were reopened.
According to San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Tony Cipolla, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a potential threat call from a neighbor of a home in the 1300 block of 18th Street in Oceano at around 2:45 p.m.
Sheriff’s deputies found a person who appeared to be having a mental health crisis inside his house alone, Cipolla said. He could not confirm initial reports that a sister of the subject had called in the incident as an alleged break-in.
After a brief investigation, deputies determined no crime was committed and cleared the scene, he said.
