Heads up, Super Bowl partiers: SLO police will be on lookout for drunk drivers

The San Luis Obispo Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday night within city limits.

That checkpoint will be located at an undisclosed location between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Police will locate the checkpoint where other impaired driving-related crashes have occurred.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” San Luis Obispo Police Department Sgt. Tim Koznek said in a news release. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Police officers will also patrol for people driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol on Saturday and Sunday while people are celebrating the Super Bowl.

“Super Bowl celebrations are a time for fun and community, but safety should always come first,” Koznek said. “If you plan to drink, make sure you have a reliable way to get home, whether that’s a designated sober driver, rideshare, taxi or public transportation.”

Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, and even some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs can cause impaired driving, police said.

Drivers charged with a DUI for the first time are often fined about $13,500 and have their license suspended, police said.

Before going to a Super Bowl party, take these safety measures:

  • Designate a sober driver.
  • If you don’t have a sober driver, take public transportation or a ride sharing service like Uber.
  • If you’re hosting the party, offer non-alcoholic beverages, too.
  • “Don’t let friends or family members drive impaired,” the release said. “Take their keys and help arrange a safe ride.”
