Alleged car thief rams SLO County police vehicle, kicks off high-speed chase

Police chased down and arrested an alleged car thief on Wednesday morning, after they say he rammed a BMW into a police car and led officers in a high-speed chase in Paso Robles.

Paso Robles Police Department officers got a notification of a wanted white BMW through the License Plate Reader System at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The BMW had already led California Highway Patrol officers in a high-speed chase on Tuesday.

Officers found the BMW parked on Park Street. Kyle DelgadoYoung, 24, was driving the car, and officers suspected him to be connected with a series of vehicle burglaries in Paso Robles, police said.

“When detectives tried to box the vehicle in, DelgadoYoung intentionally rammed a Paso Robles Police Department sergeant’s vehicle and fled the scene,” the release said.

DelgadoYoung swerved onto northbound Highway 101, driving up to 120 mph on the right shoulder of the highway to pass other vehicles, according to the release.

“Due to the suspect’s reckless and dangerous driving behavior, the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety,” the release said.

About 10 minutes later, California Highway Patrol’s King City Field Office spotted the BMW and started another pursuit.

“CHP successfully deployed spike strips, disabling the BMW and taking DelgadoYoung into custody,” the release said.

DelgadoYoung was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of four charges: felony evading a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of stolen property and an outstanding felony warrant.

As of Thursday morning, he remained in custody at the jail in lieu of $80,000 bail.

Police returned the BMW to its owners.

“The Paso Robles Police Department would like to thank the California Highway Patrol King City Field Office for their assistance in safely apprehending the suspect,” the release said.
