Man arrested after strangling ex-girlfriend, ramming car and waving ax in SLO, police say

A man was arrested Monday after police say he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home in San Luis Obispo and strangled her, then rammed a car and waved an ax out the window during a chase.

Just after 1 a.m., San Luis Obispo Police Department received a 911 call from an adult female reporting an assault, police said in a news release Tuesday.

The woman’s ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Brian Dill, broke into her apartment in the middle of the night, strangled her and then left, police said in the news release.

While she was making the 911 call, Dill returned and smashed one of her apartment windows with a hammer, police said.

Officers who responded to the scene saw Dill leaving the area in his car with the lights blacked out, the release said. They lost sight of Dill’s car on Highway 101, but notified the California Highway Patrol to “be on the lookout.”

Minutes later, the CHP notified SLO police that Dill had rammed another car on northbound Highway 101 at California Boulevard while waving an ax out the window, the release said.

The CHP located Dill’s car minutes later near Santa Rosa Park off the highway, the release said. When contacted, Dill ran from his car, but was caught a short distance away.

Dill was arrested and booked at the SLO County Jail on suspicion of three felony charges — corporal injury, burglary and possession of a controlled substance with prior violations — and two misdemeanor charges of possession of paraphernalia and a controlled substance.

Dill’s bail was set at $100,000. He was still in custody as of Tuesday morning.
