Seeing blowing dust and sand? SLO County pollution agency issues air quality warning
The San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District issued a “better breather alert” Monday afternoon after air quality in part of San Luis Obispo County deteriorated.
According to a news release from the APCD, blowing dust and sand in the Oceano Dunes and Nipomo Mesa reached higher-than-usual levels Monday afternoon, and will remain elevated until around 7 p.m.
Dust in the air is forecasted to peak between 2 and 6 p.m., during which the APCD recommended that the public reschedule outdoor activities, according to the release.
The elevated sand and dust levels in the air may pose a health risk for sensitive individuals such as infants and children and adults with existing respiratory or heart conditions, according to the release.
If you can see dust and sand blowing in the air, the APCD recommends all adults and children avoid strenuous outdoor activities, remain indoors as much as possible and set any air heating or cooling systems to recirculation mode, according to the release
Members of the public should consult their doctor if they are experiencing health problems in the affected area, according to the release.
Current air quality conditions can be monitored at the San Luis Obispo County APCD website and will be monitored over the coming days as forecasts change, according to the release.
