Man injured in shootout with SLO County deputies is identified

A man who was shot and injured in an apparent gun battle with San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies late Wednesday has been identified as a 37-year-old Templeton man.

According to a news release Thursday evening, Thomas Farrell fired a gun at Sheriff’s Office units who were responding to reports of shots heard near Templeton High School around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Multiple gunshots hit a patrol vehicle, the release said.

Farrell was then shot and injured after a second unit arrived at the scene and a deputy engaged with him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies administered medical aid to Farrell before he was taken to a local hospital, the release said. He remained in stable condition as of Thursday evening.

Farrell has since been booked into custody on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, according to the release. He was being held without bail, according to the Sheriff’s Office’s Who’s in Custody website.

No deputies were injured during the shootout, the Sheriff’s Office said.

All four deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave and will be required to attend mandatory crisis counseling, the release said.
