At least seven police officers and sheriff’s deputies, a police dog and a drone spent a portion of Tuesday afternoon searching the behind Madonna Inn on Tuesday afternoon for an elusive suspect who was hiding in the open space.

The officers were searching for Randy Picco, who was suspected of two previous felony incidents of burglary and vandalism at the inn, where he had been breaking into rooms, San Luis Obispo Police Department public information officer Christine Wallace told The Tribune.

Picco was seen at the inn by staff, who called the Police Department, Wallace said.

Picco attempted to elude law enforcement, Wallace said. According to police scanner traffic, he was on the phone with 911 but being uncooperative with dispatchers.

Wallace said he was eventually located on Cerro San Luis, hiding under shrubbery.

The SLO County Sheriff’s Office K9 assisted in the search, and the SLO Fire Department provided their ATV for trail access, Wallace said.

Picco was arrested in violation of his parole on suspicion of felony burglary and vandalism and was booked on a parole hold, Wallace said.
