Grover Beach police arrest man suspected of stabbing a person in the neck

An unhoused man was arrested Wednesday night after police say he allegedly stabbed another homeless person in the neck in Grover Beach.

According to a news release, Grover Beach police, Five Cities Fire Department and San Luis Ambulance personnel were dispatched to the 1800 block of East Grand Avenue around 7:11 p.m. for a report of a stabbing.

On their arrival, emergency personnel found a 34-year-old man with a “life-threatening stab wound to the neck.”

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment, according to the release. He is expected to survive.

Meanwhile, officers conducting the investigation into the stabbing were able to identify the suspect with the help of home surveillance videos. He was identified as Mark Lee Simpson, 24. Simpson is an unhoused resident of the Central Coast.

According to the release, Grover Beach police put out a “be-on-the-lookout” broadcast for Simpson around 9:30 p.m.

Simpson was ultimately located by the Arroyo Grande Police Department. Grover Beach police responded and positively identified Simpson before arresting him.

He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of a charge of attempted murder.
