8 credit card skimming devices found at Morro Bay gas station, police say

Morro Bay police officers are investigating a credit card skimming operation at a gas station after a San Luis Obispo County Weights & Measures employee found unauthorized skimming devices.

Skimming devices steal credit card information during credit or debit card transactions when the card is swiped through the device to make a purchase.

According to a news release, officers were contacted and made aware of the skimming operation at Sinclair Gasoline on Thursday around 4:50 p.m.

Eight devices were located within several gas pumps at the gas station at 940 Morro Bay Boulevard.

Morro Bay Police officers searched all gas stations within Morro Bay city limits and did not find any additional devices, according to the news release.

The investigation is ongoing, the release said.

Police did not immediately return an email request for information as to whether anyone reported stolen credit card information before they found the devices.

Morro Bay police are are asking anyone with information to contact the department at (805) 772-6229 or San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.
