2 stores sold tobacco to underage customers in Grover Beach sting, police say
As a part of a sting operation, the Grover Beach Police Department cited two cashiers at local retail stores for selling tobacco products to customers under the age of 21.
The minimum age of sale for tobacco products was raised from 18 to 21 years old in June 2016.
The police department had “underage decoys” try to purchase tobacco products, which include electronic smoking devices, from 17 stores in Grover Beach, according to a police department news release.
Cashiers were cited at two locations, while the other 15 locations turned the decoys away without selling them any tobacco products, according to the release.
The police department said the goal of the operation was to limit underage access to tobacco products.
According to the release, Grover Beach Police and the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department will conduct sting operations every so often to ensure that local businesses are following the law.
