Atascadero police trying to identify armed car chase suspect who fled toward Motel 6

Atascadero police continue to search for an armed suspect who led them on a vehicle pursuit late Sunday night and later fled on foot toward Motel 6.

Officers conducted a check on a vehicle about 11:11 p.m. at Paloma Creek Park in the 11600 block of Viejo Camino, according to an Atascadero Police Department news release.

During the check, the driver fled in the vehicle, and officers gave chase. The pursuit ended after the driver crashed into a light pole at the intersection of El Camino Real and Santa Rosa Road.

The driver then fled on foot toward Motel 6 at 9400 El Camino Real with what appeared to be a rifle, the release says. Police detained the passengers in the vehicle, all of whom were juveniles.

Atascadero police requested assistance from the Paso Robles Police Department, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and the CHP. Officers set up a perimeter around the area and used a K9 unit to conduct a search.

Police were unable to locate the suspect following an extensive search and are working to confirm the person’s identity.

Although it appears the suspect was armed at the time of the search, there’s no indication the person poses a current threat to Atascadero residents, according to the release.
