Santa Maria officer shoots armed man near the recently reopened Boomers

Santa Maria Police shot a man who reportedly was waving a gun in front of people Sunday afternoon near the recently reopened Boomers! family entertainment center.

Officers responded to reports of someone brandishing a weapon about 12:57 p.m. near the business, a national chain that offers mini-golf, go karts and more.

The park and arcade at 2250 Preisker Lane reopened Saturday after months of closure due to COVID-19, according to a Boomers manager.

The manager said all employees and guests were brought inside and told to shelter in place until police gave them further instruction.

When officers arrived, the man was near Broadway and Preisker Lane, according to a news release.

He was found to have a handgun and a Santa Maria officer shot him, according to the release. Additional details on what led up to the shooting were not available. Only the one officer was said to have fired his weapon.

Officers “rapidly engaged in lifesaving efforts” and the man was taken to a local hospital, the release stated.

Employees and guests were locked in for about 20 to 30 minutes, the Boomers manager said, before an officer came and said they could reopen.

“It’s not every day you are near a shooting,” the manager said. “It’s not usually the case here.”

The alleged assailant’s name was not immediately released. His condition is unknown and the investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
