SLO police arrest suspect in stabbing outside liquor store

San Luis Obispo police on Thursday arrested a suspect who allegedly stabbed a man during a confrontation outside a liquor store near downtown.

Officers responded at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday to reports of a stabbing in the 100 block of Higuera Street near SLO Beverage n’ More liquor store, according to a news release.

Nathan Ryland, 49, of San Luis Obispo told police that Brian O’Neal Twyman, 45, approached him when he was in front of the business. The two men became involved in a confrontation, and Twyman allegedly stabbed Ryland, the release says.

Twyman — who police describe as a transient — then left the area and headed toward the Highway 101 overpass. Ryland provided officers with a description of Twyman and said he didn’t know him prior to the incident.

Ryland was transported by ambulance to a local hospital to receive treatment for an abdominal laceration and was later released.

A short time later, Twyman was detained by police in the area of the Highway 101 overpass near Higuera Street. Twyman matched the description of the stabbing suspect and was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he’s being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident and are continuing to review evidence. Anyone with information about the stabbing is encouraged to call the San Luis Obispo Police Department at 805-781-7317 or Crime Stoppers at 805-549-7867.
