Wrong-way driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after Highway 101 crash, CHP says

A driver who allegedly drove the wrong way on Highway 101 early Sunday morning and caused a minor crash in Atascadero was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP says.

According to a CHP news release, 36-year-old Monica Duggan of Atascadero, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 around 1:30 a.m.

Arnold Johnson, 52, of Paso Robles, and a passenger were driving southbound in the same area when Johnson spotted Duggan driving towards them, the CHP says.

According to the release, Johnson swerved to avoid a collision, but was still hit by the approaching car. The two cars spun out before coming to a rest on the road.

Duggan was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the release. She was treated for a bloody nose at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.

Both Johnson and his passenger were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center “for precautionary reasons,” according to the release.

The CHP is currently investigating the crash.
