A thief is ‘fishing’ at bank deposit boxes around SLO. Here’s how to protect your money
San Luis Obispo Police are warning the public to be cautious when using bank deposits because of recent attempts of “fishing” at two local banks.
Fishing involves using a string and a sticky substance to pull a check or cash out of a deposit box.
“We know drop boxes are very convenient for tight schedules; however, please be aware that ‘fishing’ expeditions do take place,” SLO police said in a statement. “If you can make deposits during business hours, that’s the best way to avoid your deposit from potentially being fished. As always, if you see something suspicious, please report it to us as soon as possible.”
SLOPD Capt. Brian Amoroso told The Tribune the theft attempts took place at the U.S. Bank on South Higuera Street near Trader Joe’s and Chase Bank downtown on Monday.
“When you throw (the fishing tool) into the slot, the idea is that deposit envelopes stick to the super sticky glue like a rat trap so the thieves can pull them out,” Amoroso said.
Police said footage of camera surveillance images from the banks could help identify the thieves. But they hadn’t received any images yet as of midday Thursday.
