The Pinedorado parade is preceded each year by the American Field Service 5K Fun Run. This year’s run is Saturday, Sept. 3, to be held along the parade route beginning 7:45 a.m. from Coast Union High School.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. Runners will pay $15 to enter or $20 with a T-shirt, according to Sharon Bisso, AFS coordinator.
Funds raised through the 5K are used to cover the expenses of Coast Union students who are spending their senior year abroad and expenses of those foreign students who come here to Cambria for their senior years.
This year, Bisso struggled to find a host family for foreign students to attend Coast Union.

“I worked and worked, but unfortunately I was unable to find a host family. I’m devastated, but I will work all year, with Marcia Hilger to get host families for next fall.”
The AFS does have two Coast Union students who will be completing their senior years abroad in 2017. And funds from this year’s 5K will help cover the expenses of those students.
Jesse Houser, a junior at Coast Union, will be finishing high school in Japan next year, Bisso said. And junior Hannah Goldstein is considering going to Italy, but “is keeping her options open” as to where she might wish to go in 2017, Bisso said.
