Coast Union graduate Jake McAvoy was well rewarded for his efforts this summer pitching for the Glenwood Geckos in the Mountain West Summer Collegiate Baseball League in Colorado.

The Geckos entered the playoffs with a 26-6 record and went 3-0 in the playoffs, including their 6-4 win in the championship game over the Steamboat Springs Storm on Saturday, July 16, at Ron Patch Memorial Field in Carbondale, Colorado.

Jake McAvoy, College of the Siskiyous pitcher

McAvoy, class of 2015, is entering his sophomore year at College of the Siskiyous in the shadow of Mount Shasta in Weed.

The 19-year-old said he increased the velocity on his fastball this summer and fine-tuned the location of his off-speed pitches.

“My mechanics improved as well,” he said. “I was very satisfied with my performance, and from the first start to my last, I saw huge improvement.”

McAvoy won three games and had one save in five appearances for the Geckos. After redshirting last year, McAvoy said he’s looking forward to pitching for the varsity in “fall ball” at College of the Siskiyous.
