Mireles continues to shine on tennis court despite loss to Morro Bay
The Coast Union tennis team ran up against a tough opponent Thursday, March 24, in the Morro Bay Pirates, who defeated the Broncos 14-4, according to Coach Shannon Sutherland.
On the positive side for the Broncos, top seed Alexis Mireles prevailed in his sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and the doubles duo of Roberto Quintero and Eric Hollingsead won a set, 6-2.
The remaining matches on this season’s schedule do not get any easier for the Broncos. Following spring break, they play at Templeton (April 6), then they entertain Santa Maria (April 13) and Atascadero (April 19 and 26), with their final match also at home, against Templeton (April 27).
After the semester ends, Mireles’ next step will be college, and he has several impressive opportunities: He has been accepted at San Jose State, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Cal State Northridge and USC. He’s still weighing his options.
Will his outstanding tennis skills be a factor when he settles on a university to attend in the fall?
In his applications, Mireles referenced his excellent high school tennis career, which he used “as a way to show that I have leadership skills,” he explained in a text interview.
Mireles says he has every intention to walk on to the varsity tennis team once he is settled at a university this fall.
Quintero will attend California State University at Sacramento this fall. He was the MVP of the boys soccer squad this past season, so he will walk on to try and make the Cal State Sacramento varsity soccer team.
“It’s worth a shot,” he said.
Special to The Cambrian.
