Thursday, March 17, was St. Patrick’s Day, and while the Coast Union baseball team was having a bit of a struggle beating the Avenal Buccaneers on one part of the Cambria campus (hanging on for a 9-6 win), the Broncos must have been green with envy over what was happening on the softball field at the same time.

The Lady Broncos softball squad breezed past Avenal 15-0 thanks to a no-hitter by senior pitcher Ellie Magnuson. She was supported by stellar defense and the hitting of Reagan Kniffen, Maddie May and the rest of the lineup.

Every Coast Union player had at least one hit, and no Coast player went down on strikes.

Ellie (Magnusson) and Reagan (Kniffen) are on the same page.

Kniffen had two hits and scored twice, and May also had a pair of hits, including a two-run double. Ani Corbet contributed two hits, and Magnuson collected two hits, including a double and a bases-loaded triple. She scored three times.

Head coach Rocky Fordyce said it was “pretty much a good team effort.” He said catcher Kniffen is “calling all the pitches for Ellie,” and that “Ellie and Reagan are on the same page.”

The team plays two road games before returning home for a 3:30 p.m. game April 15 against Cuyama Valley.
