Bellarmine-Jefferson ruins Coast Union’s season finale
After polishing off all opponents in the Coast Valley League — winning the CVL with a 10-0 record — and before hosting a CIF Division 5A playoff game Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Broncos took a preplayoff road trip to Bellarmine-Jefferson High School Guards in Burbank.
Head coach Tim May said he knew going into the game Friday, Feb. 12, that his seven varsity players would have their “hands full.” And indeed, the final score, 56-29 in favor of the Guards, tells the story for the overmatched Broncos.
“The game was an old-fashioned ‘take to the woodshed’ type of game, and they just beat us in every facet,” May explained. The Broncos had not seen a team as “athletic and relentless all season. We struggled to match up … and the first part of the game was like a stun grenade went off and there was white noise,” May recalls.
The Broncos were down 14-2 before rallying and making the score a bit more balanced at 14-9 when the first quarter ended.
May was impressed with the quickness that the Guards showed on the perimeter and said their “offensive post game was overwhelming.”
The good news for Coast Union is that playing the Guards was of no significance to the Broncos’ future playoff hunt. Wednesday night’s game against the AGBU Spartans was played too late to be reported in this paper, but the score will be in Thursday’s Tribune.
