Coast Union girls best Midland in soccer 2-1
Goals by Lindy Ortiz and Rebecca Tavera led the Coast Union girls’ soccer squad to a 2-1 win over Midland High School at home Friday, Jan. 29. Cynthia Cadena had five saves in goal for the Lady Broncos.
After recent layoffs due to inclement weather, head coach Jack Mettier said his team rebounded well but missed opportunities: “In the Midland game, we started out strong but seemed to let up. … We had way too many shots and chances to have only two goals.”
Mettier reported that his top scorer, Martha Gomez, suffered a torn ACL in the loss on Jan. 22 at Orcutt Academy. He explained that Gomez is such an essential part of the team’s offense that, without her, the other players tend not to have the same energy and enthusiasm.
Meanwhile Mettier reported that due to players not keeping their grades up, he “lost a starter and two others.”
The next home match for the girls will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.
