Coast Union boys trounce Shandon in basketball; girls win on forfeit
The Coast Union boys basketball team towered over the Shandon Outlaws on Friday night, Jan. 22, cruising to a 51-15 on the road. The MacKinnon twins combined for more than half of Coast Union’s points, with Sam scoring 14 points and Jack adding 12.
Riley Kennedy matched Sam MacKinnon’s total with 14 points of his own; Nick Roper picked up six points, and Auggie Johnson and Roberto Cueva each tossed in four points.
Before playing a team from a smaller school like Shandon, head coach Tim May explains to his team that he has “been on both sides. I’ve been on the receiving end of being out-matched,” and hence, he insists on not running up the score.
Still, May expects his team to continue to strive to improve, and always show sharp focus on defensive execution. Preventing his players from being too relaxed in a blowout is a top priority for the coach, and he reminds his team that “our greatest opponent is ourselves.”
The win improves the Broncos’ Coast Valley League first-place record to 6-0. Second-place Valley Christian Academy defeated Coastal Christian 58-14 on Jan. 19, so the Lions remain a game and a half behind Coast Union.
The boys junior varsity, meanwhile, defeated Shandon 53-42 at Shandon. Head coach Michael McAvoy said he only had five players (one of his team members was ill), and the Broncos won the game in overtime.
Forrest Johnson had 11 points, and McAvoy cited “a total team effort on defense led by Gay Lyons and Cameron Castle.”
The next home game for the Broncos is at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 5 against Maricopa. The next home game for the JV team is Thursday, Feb. 4, against Nipomo at 3:30 p.m.
Girls
The Lady Broncos basketball game scheduled at Shandon for Friday, Jan. 22, was forfeited, according to Head Coach Bobby Youngs. The Outlaws coach reported that he did not have enough players to field a team, hence the forfeit.
Because a forfeit by an opponent is considered a win for Coast Union, the Broncos’ record improves to 5-1, a game behind first-place Valley Christian Academy, which defeated Coastal Christian and improved to 6-0. VCA handed Coast Union its only defeat in league play so far this season, Jan. 8 at Coast Union.
The next home game for Coast Union is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5.
