First-year boys soccer coach Omar Catalan announced when he took over the varsity team that he would work to bring about a competitive, more disciplined culture. The results of the 2017-18 soccer season — 7-13 — reflect the progress that Catalan sought following last year’s 2-13-1 finish.

Catalan has announced his 2017-18 awards, naming seniors Ivan Favila and Daniel Pena, both midfielders, as Co-MVPs. Catalan gave the Coach’s Award to senior midfielder Fidel Figueroa.

“These were three players that I felt, when it came down to important moments, I could count on,” Catalan explained. One of the most impressive matches for the Broncos was their 3-2 win over Atascadero during the Cats and Hounds Tournament on Dec. 1.

Boys basketball

It will come as no surprise to those following the Coast Union boys basketball team this past season that senior standout Riley Kennedy has received the MVP award from coach Tim May, the only award given out by the coach.

Two Bronco sophomores received recognition from the Coast Valley League: Nate Markham was named to the CVL second team, and David Amodei received honorable mention.
