Butterfield sets pace for Coast Union in Pinedorado 5K run

The Coast Union cross country team performed well Saturday, Sept. 2, in the 26th annual AFS-Pinedorado 5K Fun Run.

The top six Bronco runners were Paul Butterfield (who was fourth overall with a time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds); David Amodei (fifth overall in 19:26); Colby Ratzat (seventh overall in 19:53); Nate Markham (14th overall in 22:32); David Nolan (17th overall in 23:46); and David May (20th overall in 24:38).

The top female finisher for Coast was Karina Mendoza (34th in 28:18). Coast Union teacher Wade Lawrence, who shares cross country coaching duties with Ayen Johnson now that Jim Hurley has retired, was 26th overall (26:51). Broncos softball coach Steve Kniffen came in 30th (27:24).

The top male finisher for the 5K — which netted $910, according to American Field Service organizer Sharon Bisso — was Pepe Gonzalez (16:41). The top female finisher was Sophie Gowen (22:07).

The next home cross country event for the Broncos is set for Sept. 20 against Santa Maria High School, a 3:30 p.m. start time.
