Coast Union girls rout Villanova Prep on soccer field
Coast Union’s girls soccer squad traveled to Ojai on Saturday, Dec. 3, for a nonleague match against Villanova Prep and turned in a dominant performance, beating the Lady Wildcats 8-1.
“It is always nice to travel that far and have (8-1) be the result,” Coast Union coach Victoria McConnell said.
Vanessa Ramierez and Kaelani Ribeira scored two goals each, while Cynthia Cadena, Ailyn Casas, Ashly Colins and Faby Gonzalez each booted in one score for Coast Union.
Cadena was in goal during the first half and stopped two shots; Maria Castillo was in goal during the second half and gave up the Wildcats’ only goal.
The team was coming off a 1-0 victory Thursday, Dec. 1, against Morro Bay High School’s varsity team. The only score was a last-minute penalty kick by Ribeira, according to McConnell. Cadena made 15 saves in goal for Coast.
“Both teams battled hard, and it was an exciting match to watch,” McConnell commented.
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, McConnell’s team traveled to the Santa Maria area to play the Orcutt Academy Spartans, and came out on the short end of a 5-1 score.
The only score Coast Union could muster was booted in by Cammie Tatham off of a free kick by Kaelani Ribera. “Our defense was able to hold them offside over 15 times,” McConnell said.
The Lady Broncos are now 2-2 on the season.
The next home match for the girls is Thursday, Dec. 8, a 3:30 p.m. start against Santa Maria.
Boys
The Coast varsity boys soccer team had expected to play Morro Bay’s varsity team Thursday, Dec. 1, but it turned out their foe was Morro Bay’s JV team.
Still, after winning 3-2 in Morro Bay, coach Luis Plasencia said, “For us, every single game counts, whether it’s JV or varsity. We are freelancing, so it is good to see how our kids are responding.”
The boys entertained the Orcutt Academy Spartans on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The Spartans came out on top, winning 3-2. Both teams scored one goal in the first half, but Orcutt kicked in two goals in the second half for the win.
The goals for Coast Union were scored by Emany Plasencia and Luis Alberto Lizaola. Coach Plasencia said the team needs “more quickness, more communication, more aggressiveness and more awareness” in terms of where other players are on the field.
“With time and experience” the team will be able to take advantage of opportunities to score, the coach explained.
The boys’ next home match is Wednesday, Jan. 4, against Tranquillity High School at 6 p.m.
