The Coast Union volleyball team lost a nonleague match to Templeton on Thursday, Sept. 1, at home. The score was 25-9, 25-15, 25-8.

Assistant coach Dennis White said Templeton has a “very good serving team and went on runs of points because we were not able to control the serves with solid passing.”

However, the Lady Broncos “hung on,” White recalled, and “blocked some of their hard-hit balls and dug in on defense with better passing.” The Lady Eagles “tip a lot and scored a number of points because we had not practiced tip defense,” White continued.

The Coast Union team never “hung their heads, and played hard through every point and set,” White said.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Lady Broncos traveled to Laguna Blanca to play in a 26-team tournament. Coast achieved runner-up status in the Silver Division, losing to Faith Baptist 2-1 in the finals. Coast had split with Faith Baptist earlier in the day.

Head coach Pam Kenyon praised the team’s effort at Laguna Blanca, noting that the girls are playing “tough and getting more and more comfortable with each other and the system.”

On Sept. 6, the volleyball team lost at Morro Bay 25-15, 25-13, 25-15. Realy Barbosa had eight kills, and Gigi Stoothoff had seven kills and two blocks for Coast. Ailyne Casas and Hailey Zinn added seven kills each.

The next home match for Coast Union is Tuesday, Sept. 13, against Dunn School. The junior varsity team plays at 4 p.m., with the varsity taking the court at 5.

Tennis

The Lady Broncos’ tennis squad ran into a tough opponent at Mission Prep on Thursday, Sept. 1, losing 17-1. Coast could only muster one winning set.

That one set was won by Coast’s doubles team of Ani Corbet and Alyssa Drew; they prevailed 6-2.

The next home match for Coast is Friday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m. against Santa Maria High School.

Cross-Country

The Coast Union cross-country team ran its first 5K of the season Saturday, Sept. 3, as part of the annual Pinedorado festivities. Paul Butterfield finished first in 18 minutes, 5 seconds. Isabella Raethke came in second for Coast in 21:38.

Colby Ratzat was third (22:28), David Nolan was fourth (22:31), and Ethan Walters placed fifth (23:10) among Bronco runners.

Other finishers included: Cesar Hernandez (23:54), David May (24:04), Austin Holmberg (24:57), Vanessa Ramirez (25:46), Karina Mendoza (27:26), and Maria Ramirez (29:25).

Coach Ayen Johnson, who shares coaching duties with Jim Hurley, said, “Overall I feel like they did a great job in their first real race of the season.”

On Saturday, Sept. 10, the team is scheduled to participate in the annual Morro Bay Invitational.
