Roadwork will close Highway 1 overnight this week

Both lanes of Highway 1 will be closed about 2 miles south of Ragged Point to traffic overnight Thursday due to roadwork.

Crews will be installing precast beams as part of a $4.1 million project constructing a viaduct and retaining wall, according to Caltrans.

The full closure will happen from 9 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday, the state road agency said.

Caltrans said this closure will extend from the traffic signals that maintain 24/7 traffic control north and south of the project area between the San Carpoforo Creek Bridge and south of Ragged Point. The area near San Simeon is considered the gateway to Big Sur.

During the closure of that short stretch of federally designated scenic byway, local residents will be able to proceed through the closed area when heavy equipment is not on the highway, Caltrans said. Delays are anticipated not to exceed one hour.

Electronic message boards will alert the public.

The contractor is Souza Engineering of San Luis Obispo. Caltrans expects the project will be finished next spring.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
