Assistant Cal Poly football coach arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon

A first-year Cal Poly football assistant coach best known for an alleged altercation with former Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable was arrested for his alleged role in a fight at a Pismo Beach bar early Saturday.

Randy Hanson, 44, was arrested at 1:23 a.m. on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into County Jail after allegedly attacking a man with a beer bottle at Harry’s Nightclub & Beach Bar, according to Pismo Beach police Sgt. Tom Portz.

Hanson was no longer in custody as of Sunday night. Jail officials refused to release the bail amount.

Hanson was part of a group of people who had come to the bar traveling in an SUV limousine, Portz said. It was not clear whether Hanson knew the man he allegedly struck with a bottle.

While Hanson was a defensive assistant with the Raiders in 2009, he was treated for a fractured jaw and broken teeth in a highly publicized argument during which he said Cable threw him from a chair.

Hanson told Yahoo! Sports that Cable threw him from his chair and into a piece of furniture.

“He was screaming, ‘I’ll (bleeping) kill you! I’ll (bleeping) kill you! And I have no reason to believe he wouldn’t if they hadn’t pulled him away,” Hanson said.

Hanson brought a civil suit against Cable and the Raiders before it was sent to an NFL arbitrator in 2011.

Cal Poly head coach Tim Walsh declined to comment on Sunday’s incident until he had more information.

Walsh hired Hanson to become the Mustangs’ defensive backs coach in April after former defensive coordinator Greg Lupfer left for an assistant job at Colorado State.

“In spring football, the evaluation on him was very positive,” Walsh said. “Players felt like they learned a lot about football, and that was a positive thing. That’s what we were looking forward to.

“From a work-ethic standpoint, you can match his, but I don’t know if you can beat it. He puts a lot of hours in.”

Hanson served three seasons (2000-02) as a defensive assistant under Walsh when he was the head coach at Portland State.

The very next season, Hanson went on to a string of NFL jobs with the Minnesota Vikings, the St. Louis Rams and eventually the Raiders.

After parting with Oakland following the incident with Cable in 2009, Hanson coached for one season as an assistant under Dennis Green with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL.
