A “highly inebriated” man was rescued from a downtown San Luis Obispo creek early Saturday morning after he stopped to urinate and then fell in, police said.

According to an Instagram post by the San Luis Obispo Police Department, a caller reported to police at 1 a.m. that she had gotten a call from her boyfriend — but as she heard the sound of running water, the call dropped.

She then tracked his phone location to the area of Monterey and Nipomo streets, the post said.

A patrol began to search the area and found the man in the creek behind Tonita’s Mexican Food.

Then with the help of a ladder from the San Luis Obispo Fire Department, the man was helped from the creek and taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the Police Department said.

According to police, the man “was highly inebriated and had gone to the creek to urinate.” He then allegedly climbed over the railing along the creek and fell down the embankment, where he was “unable to climb out.”

Police did not release the name of the man as of Sunday night.
