The occupants of a Paso Robles home — and their dog — safely made it out Saturday afternoon after an alert neighbor notified them of a fire in the building.

According to a Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services news release, firefighters responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the 600 block of Brookhill Drive around 2:45 p.m.

The first firefighters at the scene found smoke and fire inside a two-car garage with fire extending into the living space of the duplex, the release said.

According to the fire department, firefighters were able to stop the fire in the garage space and prevent it from moving into the living space and adjacent home.

“The residents were home at the time and were notified of the fire by an alert neighbor,” the release said. “Both occupants and their dog were able to safely evacuate prior to first arriving units.”

Two fire engines, one ladder truck, one squad and one battalion chief responded, the release said. One fire engine and a battalion chief from Cal Fire and one fire engine from Atascadero Fire all responded to assist.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services reminds all residents to ensure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their residence,” the release said.
