A controlled burn sent up a plume of smoke in rural San Luis Obispo County late Wednesday morning.

The burn will cover 30 acres east of Santa Margarita to reduce wildfire risk and improve nearby oak woodland habitats, according to a post on X from Cal Fire.

Smoke is expected to be visible from Highway 101 and the surrounding areas, but fire crews were on hand to contain the flames to the MC Ranch VMP area, Cal Fire said in the post.

According to fire tracker app Watch Duty, the burn reached around 11 acres as of 11:40 a.m.
