Upcoming sewer pipe replacement work in downtown San Luis Obispo will bring enhanced reliability and safety to the city’s water systems — and traffic delays to commuters.

Beginning as early as June 30, the city of San Luis Obispo will start replacing sewer lines on Chorro, Islay, Santa Rosa and Leff streets.

Construction will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. During these hours, commuters and pedestrians can expect minor traffic impacts due to lane closures, sidewalk closures and intermittent road closures with detours, according to a news release.

Work will begin with potholing to mark underground utilities, which will last for around two weeks. Following the potholing work, the first phase of replacement — trench work — will begin.

The project will result in the replacement of 2,741 feet of sewer mains, the upsizing of sewer and storm drain pipes from 8-inch to 12-inch diameters and the replacement of 363 feet of storm drain pipes.

Replacement efforts will focus on aging pipes that have “reached the end of their service life,” according to the release. Improvements to these pipes will prevent backups, reduce flooding risks and improve the overall capacity of SLO’s sewer system.

Due to the ongoing construction, commuters should allow extra time for travel in the area and exercise caution when driving through construction zones, according to the release.
