A vegetation fire scorched nearly 40 acres in eastern San Luis Obispo County late Sunday night.

The Helios Fire sparked at 8:43 p.m. at the California Valley Solar Ranch in California Valley, according to Cal Fire.

The fire quickly blazed through 20 acres of grass and originally had the potential to burn through more than 2,000 acres, but no structures were ever threatened, Cal Fire said in a post on X.

At 10:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews had made significant progress and the fire had slowed down.

Responders worked through the night to increase containment, the agency said.

“Resources will be out early this morning to check the fire for hot spots,” Cal Fire said.

By 6 a.m., resources had been released after crews were able to stop forward progress overnight, according to Cal Fire.

The Helios Fire was 90% contained at 38 acres as of 8 a.m. Monday.

The cause of the Helios Fire is under investigation, according to the agency.

Current Southern California wildfires

This map shows wildfires that have been updated within the past 7 days from the Integrated Reporting of Wildland-Fire Information (IRWIN) and the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). The larger the circle, the larger the wildfire by acres. Data is from the US Department of the Interior, Office of Wildland Fire, IRWIN, NIFC, NASA, NOAA and ESRI.
