Crash backs up traffic on Hwy. 101. Prius driver said car hit him on purpose

A two-vehicle crash backed up traffic on Highway 101 in Shell Beach during Friday’s evening commute.

A white Prius and a gray Lexus SUV crashed at about 3:30 p.m. in the southbound lane of Highway 101 south of the Avila Beach Drive on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol traffic log.

As of 3:36 p.m., the Prius was stuck in the No. 2 lane of the highway, and the CHP log described the driver of the Prius as “agitated.”

The Prius driver said “the other car hit him from behind ... making it sound as if it was on purpose,” the traffic log said.

A witness told CHP that the Lexus had hit the Prius several times.

By 3:48 p.m., both vehicles were on the roadside, the CHP said. The crash did not result in injuries.

A Caltrans camera showed southbound traffic backed up to around San Luis Bay Drive.
