Airports across U.S. struggle with delays amid shutdown. What about SLO?

A partial federal government shutdown cut off funding for the Department of Homeland Security and its agencies — including the Transportation Security Administration — nearly a month ago, causing delays at airports nationwide.

But apparently not in San Luis Obispo County.

SLO County Regional Airport spokesperson Joseph Goble told The Tribune operations are currently continuing as normal under the shutdown.

“We have not experienced impacts to staffing or passenger processing,” he said. “Travelers should continue to plan for their trips as usual and follow standard airport guidance for arrival times.”

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security lapsed on Feb. 14 due to a stalemate in Congress over immigration enforcement reforms following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Goode at the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in January.

Government employees like ICE and Border Patrol agents are considered essential and have continued to work under the partial shutdown without pay — but so have many airport staff under the Transportation Security Administration.

Goble said the airport will be sure to share updates if conditions change at the airport.
