A gas leak caused about 100 residents to evacuate from an Avila Beach neighborhood on Thursday afternoon.

A trenching operation struck a large-diameter natural gas line on Canvasback Place at about 10:15 a.m., resulting in a gas leak, Cal Fire said.

About 100 residents evacuated in the Bay Estates area and about 200 others sheltered in place while the gas line was repaired, Cal Fire said.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and Port San Luis Harbor Authority assisted with evacuations and traffic control.

The incident did not cause any injuries.
