The family of Veronica Beatrice Baro, a 50-year-old woman who was found dead in San Luis Obispo last week, has launched a GoFundMe to help raise money for a funeral service.

Baro’s body was discovered by police on Feb. 12 in a homeless encampment near San Luis Obispo Creek at Los Osos Valley Road and Calle Joaquin, and she was identified by police on Tuesday.

Police were investigating the death as a possible homicide, they said in a Tuesday news release.

In the fundraiser, the family described their sudden loss as “heartbreaking and unexpected.”

“This tragedy has left us grieving in ways we never could have imagined,” wrote Jessica Baro, organizer of the fundraiser. “We are now working to arrange her private service and cremation while navigating the deep pain of losing her so suddenly. No family is ever truly prepared for a loss like this — emotionally or financially.”

According to the fundraiser, the family is hoping to raise money for both a private service for immediate family members, and a celebration of life open to friends.

“If you feel led and are able to contribute in any way, it would mean more to us than words can express,” Jessica wrote. “Please know there is absolutely no pressure — we understand that everyone’s circumstances are different. Your prayers, love, and even simply sharing this message are deeply appreciated.”

As of Friday evening, the family had raised $4,320 of its $10,000 goal. The page had received 41 donations.

The fundraiser can be found at gofundme.com/f/our-beloved-veronica.

“Thank you for standing beside our family during this unimaginable time,” the page said.
