Wrong-way driver crashes, starts vehicle fire on Highway 1 in SLO County
A wrong-way driver crashed and started a vehicle fire on Highway 1 in Morro Bay on Tuesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.
At 4:09 p.m., a silver Hyundai drove southbound down the northbound lane of Highway 1 and crashed head-on into a white Lexus near the Morro Bay Boulevard off-ramp, the CHP said.
As of 4:17 p.m., one of the vehicles was on fire. All occupants had exited the vehicles, the CHP traffic log said.
Both drivers suffered minor to moderate injuries, the CHP said.
“Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash,” the CHP said in a Facebook post.
Traffic slowed near the crash, the CHP log said.
A flurry of other crashes occurred in the rain on Tuesday evening.
One vehicle driving on Highway 41 crashed on the north side of the roadway near Straw Ridge Road at about 3:45 p.m., the CHP said. Both occupants had exited the vehicle and they did not suffer any injuries.
Then, at 4:17 p.m., a white Toyota Camry and a white pickup truck crashed near the Elephant Seal Boardwalk parking lot. The crash did not result in injuries, the CHP said.
