Man dies after being hit by train in Santa Barbara

An adult male pedestrian died Sunday afternoon after being struck by a train in Santa Barbara.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara City Fire Department and Police Department along with an American Medical Response ambulance crew were dispatched at approximately 1:45 p.m. to the scene near the 300 block of South Milpas Street, fire Battalion Chief Jon Turner told Noozhawk.

The incident involved a northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train that hit the pedestrian at the Milpas Street railroad crossing.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

His name, age and hometown were not available, with release expected after family members have been notified about the death.

Santa Barbara police and Amtrak police officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Bureau were called in and took over the investigation, police said.

Milpas Street was shut down in the area of the incident.

Pacific Surfliner Train 769 was placed on a temporary hold with an extended delay of approximately three hours initially expected, according to Amtrak.

Shortly after 3 p.m., Amtrak representatives said Train 769 to Goleta had been canceled.
