Bomb squad called after Central Coast homeowner finds grenades in their attic

A Santa Barbara homeowner called police Wednesday evening after finding what they believed to be grenades in their attic, authorities said.

Santa Barbara police officers responded to the 1500 block of Veronica Place around 5:30 p.m. Based on the appearance of the items, they requested the Santa Barbara County Bomb Squad respond to the scene.

The bomb squad personnel determined the objects were WWII-era military ordnance and then called in the Vandenberg Space Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to assist, according to the SBPD.

Authorities evacuated several homes in the area and closed the roadway to vehicles during the response as a precaution, police said in a statement.

The Vandenberg EOD team took possession of the objects, and the evacuations were lifted around 8 p.m., SBPD representatives said.

“These items were believed to have been in the residence for decades,” police added.
