Will my SLO County trash get picked up on Christmas? New Year’s? What to know
As the holidays approach in San Luis Obispo County, some businesses and services are preparing to close on select dates.
What does that mean for local garbage collection? Will Christmas and New Year’s Day delay trash pickup in SLO County?
Here’s what to keep in mind this holiday season:
Who handles garbage pickup in SLO County?
The city of San Luis Obispo partners with San Luis Garbage, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, to manage all residential and commercial waste, according to the city website.
That also includes recycling and organic waste collection services.
Waste Connections also operates South County Sanitary and Mission Country Disposal, which handle garbage pickup in other parts of the county, as well as Morro Bay Garbage, which the city of Morro Bay partners with for trash collection.
Which holidays delay trash pickup in SLO? Morro Bay?
Waste Connections only formally observes one holiday each year.
“We pick up all holidays except Christmas Day,” San Luis Garbage said on its website.
In 2025, Christmas Day falls on Thursday, Dec. 25
Due to the holiday, trash pickup will be delayed by a day, according to the San Luis Garbage website.
This means that Thursday waste collection service will be pushed to Friday.
Customers who normally get their trash picked up on Friday will see the garbage truck on Saturday instead.
Waste Connections customers across San Luis Obispo County can expect normal trash pickup on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day: Wednesday, Dec. 31, and Thursday, Jan. 1.
Will waste be collected in Paso Robles on Christmas?
Paso Robles Waste and Recycle is the only franchise collection company in town, according to the city of Paso Robles.
This holiday season, no trash collection will take place in the city on Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan. 1, according to Paso Robles Waste and Recycle.
Waste collection service will be one day late as a result, the city’s website said.
“On these holidays, our business will be closed, and no collections will be performed,” Paso Robles Waste and Recycle said on its website. “Collections typically scheduled on or after these holidays will be delayed by one day.”
Customers who normally have trash picked up on Thursdays — Christmas Day and New Year’s Day — will have their waste collected on Friday instead.
Friday garbage pickup will be pushed to Saturday, and so on, according to the city’s website.
