Elderly woman, dog rescued from house fire in SLO County beach town

Firefighters rescued an elderly woman and a dog from a house fire in Morro Bay on Thursday afternoon.

The Morro Bay Fire Department received reports of a house fire on Fairview Avenue at about 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, Fire Chief Daniel McCrain said.

When a neighbor noticed the fire, they opened the door and shouted to see if anyone needed help — and a dog ran into the yard without injuries.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they searched the home for occupants, found the woman and took her to safety, McCrain said. She was transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista hospital in San Luis Obispo.

The fire burned inside the house, but there was also a “pretty significant fire on the rear exterior of the structure,” McCrain said.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze in about 30 minutes, he said.

The home is not currently habitable, as it suffered 100% smoke damage and 20% fire damage, McCrain said.

The fire displaced the woman and a man who also lived in the home.

The dog was reunited with the man, McCrain said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
