New therapy program to aid SLO County veterans
San Luis Obispo County veterans will soon have access to a new service providing therapeutic services and local care.
According to a news release from Transitions-Mental Health Association, a $2 million grant from the California Department of Veterans Affairs, or CalVet, to the local nonprofit will establish a new program called VetWell for the next three years.
The service will provide support for veterans and their loved ones through individual, couples, family and group therapy, according to the release.
The program will use a personalized approach by offering in-person and telehealth sessions.
Veterans can also arrange home visits with clinicians for meeting over coffee, conversation or games under a program called Operation: VetConnect, according to the release.
As an independent and inclusive organization not directly affiliated with the VA, TMHA offers flexible, holistic support that extends beyond military-related concerns or specific diagnoses.
In the release, clinical program administrator Hannah Wright said any family member or individual associated with a veteran can seek services through VetWell.
“We’re trying to be as low barrier as possible,” Wright said in the release. “People can come in, regardless of discharge status or length of service.”
Members of the community who know a veteran or family member who could benefit from the VetWell program can have them call the Central Coast Hotline to receive a referral at 1-800-783-0607.
