Bike crash near Cal Poly sends student to the hospital

A Cal Poly student riding his bike near campus was sent to the hospital on Thursday afternoon after a crash with a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.

At about 4:07 p.m., the 21-year-old cyclist was traveling eastbound on Highland Drive across Highway 1 toward campus against a yellow or red light, CHP Officer Dave Reed said.

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old man driving a Mercedes SUV headed northbound on the highway had a green light, and, from a stop, slowly entered the intersection.

The cyclist struck the front left side of the Mercedes in the northbound lanes of Highway 1, and he was thrown from his bike, Reed said.

The cyclist may have suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was conscious and able to talk to Reed when he arrived at the scene, Reed said.

The CHP blocked the intersection for about 25 minutes while treating the cyclist.

An ambulance picked up the cyclist and transported him to Adventist Health Sierra Vista hospital.

“A crash at these kind of speeds can be fatal,” Reed said. “A helmet is an easy item that can save your life.”
