A quick-acting police officer from Atascadero saved a baby’s life this week.

On Wednesday, a family called the police at about 5:30 p.m. to report that their newborn infant wasn’t breathing. The dispatchers gave the family “life-saving resources over the phone” while sending officers to the scene, a Facebook post from the Atascadero Police Department said.

“Officer Alan Hurst arrived on scene just two minutes after being dispatched,” the Facebook post said. “He found the 10-day-old baby not breathing and discolored — and immediately began life-saving efforts.”

The infant started breathing on their own, and the family took the baby to the hospital as a precaution. The baby was treated and released from the hospital without incident.

On Thursday, the family visited the Police Department to thank Hurst for his efforts.

“Seeing the baby healthy and smiling was the best possible outcome — and a reminder of why we do what we do,” the Facebook post said. “Please join us in celebrating this happy reunion and recognizing everyone who played a part in this life-saving effort!”
