Areas of Morro Bay were placed under a precautionary boil water notice on Monday following a water main break.

The break was caused by a contractor, the city said in a news release. As a result, some customers in the affected areas may have already experienced low water pressure or even a temporary loss of water service earlier Monday.

The affected neighborhoods were located east of Highway 1 on both sides of Highway 41 as well as around Morro Bay High School.

As of Monday afternoon, there was no evidence the water was unsafe to drink, but the city issued a water boil notice anyway while water quality testing was underway out of an abundance of caution.

Residents and businesses in the affected area were advised to use boiled or bottled water for drinking and cooking until the State Water Resources Control Board confirms the water meets all safety standards and the advisory is lifted, the release said.

Bottled drinking water was available Monday at City Hall, the fire station at 715 Harbor St. and the water resources center at 555 South Bay Blvd.

The issue was expected to be resolved by Wednesday or sooner, test results allowing.
