2 benefit fashion shows in SLO to feature vintage outfits from Hearst Castle

Two benefit fashion shows in San Luis Obispo on Oct. 4 will invite guests to imagine the models had just stepped off the train in the 1930s on their way to visit media mogul William Randolph Hearst at his luxe San Simeon estate.

The runway shows will evoke memories of nearly a century ago as volunteer models parade in 1930s fashions to benefit The Monday Club and The Foundation at Hearst Castle.

Hearst Castle and The Monday Club were both designed by trailblazing architect Julia Morgan, California’s first female licensed architect.

The two shows at the club on Monterey Street — an 11 a.m. matinee and a 4 p.m. “teatime” or evening show — will feature outfits from the Hearst Castle Living History Collection and private collections.

“This event beautifully demonstrates how community, history and philanthropy can come together to create lasting impact,” said Doug Jenzen, the foundation’s executive director.

The foundation’s share of the fundraiser will go toward conserving two rare, 17th-century Peruvian tapestries, according to a media release.

“Partnering with the foundation is a natural fit,” said Dawn Turner, president of The Monday Club’s board. “Julia Morgan’s vision continues to unite our organizations, and this event allows us to celebrate her legacy while supporting the preservation of history.”
