About 100 households in San Luis Obispo were told to boil their water starting on Wednesday evening while the city investigated a potential water quality issue.

The notice applied to homes on Castillo Court, Capistrano Court, Isabella Way and Portola Street, the city announced in a news release on Thursday morning.

A private property on Castillo Court removed a required backflow preventer from its well, which stops well water from flowing back into the city’s water system, according to the release.

“While there is no evidence of contamination, the notice was issued out of an abundance of caution as the city awaits water quality test results,” the release said.

The city issued the boil water notice at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for water used for drinking or cooking.

“The city will notify affected residents on Castillo Court, Capistrano Court, Isabella Way and Portola Street when tests show that the water is safe to drink and there is no longer a need to boil water,” the release said.

Affected residents can find free bottled water on nearby street corners. Call the San Luis Obispo Utilities Department at 805-781-7215 with questions.
