Planned work on Highway 101 in southern San Luis Obispo County has been postponed due to the Gifford Fire.

According to Caltrans, work was scheduled to begin Sunday on both directions of Highway 101 roughly two miles north of the Santa Maria River Bridge, but it has now been delayed.

“The roadwork will be re-scheduled to a later date so emergency responders can fully focus on this incident,” the agency said in a news release Friday.

The Gifford Fire, now nearly 100,000 acres, continued to burn in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties Friday. Containment was at 15%.

This is the second highway construction project that has been delayed by the fire. Caltrans was expected to shut down a large stretch of Highway 41 starting Tuesday, but opted to postpone the work instead.
